The world's most advanced and China's first independently developed ocean drilling vessel has been officially named "Dream" and recently began its first sea trial in Guangzhou. This marks an important step forward in China's deep-sea exploration capacity building and a major breakthrough in key technologies and equipment for deep-sea exploration.
Nanyang Cable participated in the construction of this national treasure, providing key equipment such as dedicated cables for oil drilling platforms for the "Dream" drilling equipment, and facilitating the application of domestic high-end Marine drilling equipment in the world's leading drilling vessels.
The "Dream" was constructed by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Natural Resources, with the specific implementation organized by the China Geological Survey. The design and construction tasks were completed in collaboration with multiple units including China State Shipbuilding Corporation. The vessel is 179.8 meters in length, 32.8 meters in width, with a gross tonnage of 33,000 and a range of 15,000 nautical miles. It can operate normally in sea conditions of force 6 and survive safely in super typhoons of force 16. It has the capability to operate in unlimited navigation areas in all global seas. The vessel completed its preliminary design in May 2020, construction began in November 2021, and comprehensive sea trials were completed in October 2024.
This vessel adopts a "modular" design concept, overcoming numerous world-class technical challenges. It is the world's first to innovatively integrate multiple functions such as ocean scientific drilling, deep-sea oil and gas exploration, and natural gas hydrate exploration and test production, establishing China's own independent design and construction technology system for ultra-deep water drilling equipment.
The "Dream" drilling and production system is equipped with four drilling modes and three coring methods, which can meet the different operation requirements of ocean drilling and coring as well as deep-sea resource exploration. The maximum drilling depth can reach 11,000 meters, and it is expected to help global scientists realize their scientific dream of "breaking through the Earth's crust and entering the deep earth". It will provide a major platform support for China's deep-sea resource exploration, key technology and equipment research and development, as well as for global scientists to conduct ocean scientific drilling research.
